Spirit of a Conqueror: Solid defence of Christian faith
The story of Joshua and Caleb is one of the most powerful and dramatic stories in the Bible as far as this scribe can tell. Most Christians have heard of the story of Moses, but many Christians are not aware of the story involving these two.
They are an extension of the story of Moses. They are the climax to the story of Moses as Pastor Mairos Mubvumbi will reveal in the book The Spirit of a Conqueror published in March by Veriest Solutions International.
There are vital lessons in this story for all Christians to grasp. This book is loaded with practical, experience-proven, faith-based applications and teachings.
It has thrown light on how to end the reign of challenges that tend to sap the believer’s joy and poise for victory.
Well-written, the pastor uses a lot of Scripture to draw out his ideas, from both Old and New Testaments. Lots of real-life illustrations make his ideas live and breathe.
Pastor Mairos’ years of leadership in a youthful ministry Beam of Hope Ministries and being a Bible columnist have prepared him to write this book. I found most of his ideas to be solid and challenging. The book is an inspiration text which provides biblical examples of conquerors the likes of Caleb and Joshua.
The book is arranged in chapters which makes reading easier. Pastor Mairos affords the reader a rejuvenating perspective on these characters to the extent that one feels geared up to take the challenges made.
The message of hope embedded in faith is made known to the reader as the writer says “Caleb made a choice to stand out for God and obtained his personal inheritance” (p12)
The Spirit of A Conqueror is Pastor Mairos’ second book after the highly acclaimed The Grand Life Of Faith in which he focuses on demystifying the concept of faith. The Spirit of Conqueror is therefore more or less an expansion on the aforesaid. There appears to be a great improvement in his style of writing as he appears to have matured both in spirit and his command of literary tools .
It would appear the book was crafted as a motivational book to those who may feel down-trodden those in doubt of their capabilities and their part in this world.
The book is most ideal during these times wherein the faith of people seems to be wavering because they are no longer confident of their part in this fast moving world.
The characters discussed in the book offer the hope of by-gone years-faith in God’s power as He presents the reader with Caleb who dares to be different as he places his faith in God and thus manages to possess what was due to him.
The author instills hope and urges people to “start small and increase” for this will “move you from the class of history-readers and hearers only to that of of history-makers and word-doers.”(p32).
The fact that he choses Caleb as his main focus is quite critical in that not much is said of the heroism of Caleb in the Bible. It is rather inferred but the pastor picks him up as he is most likely to resemble the not-so-confident man on the street.
The “if he(Caleb) can find favour with God and be a conqueror so can I” attitude is clearly fostered by the author
As a book it should find a home on the shelf of the minister as well as the academic. This is a book any minister will likely dip into each and every time he/she tries to relate the biblical text to the contemporary world.
And as Pastor Mairos says “…pass along your legacy of faithfulness towards God to the next generations as Caleb did to Othniel who became Israel’s first judge after Joshua’s death”. What a great ending to an enjoyable book!
