Stick to your life purpose
ACTS 6:2 It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.
Life purpose refers to the calling of God upon your life. It is very important to understand that life purpose is not limited to sacred assignments. Even the believers who serve their generation and nations as journalists, medical practitioners, lawyers, drivers, plumbers and so on are called and gifted of God to serve in those capacities.
The ruling factor that works to remove the divide between the holy and the unholy jobs is located in the letter to the Colossians. Colossians 3:17 reads: âAnd whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.â
Whether you serve in the church or in the world, you are ultimately accountable to God for the manner and quality of your service. You therefore accept your placement in life as divinely ordered and do your work with excellence as a faithful servant of the heavenly Father.
Prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and John the Baptist are emulated and liked by many students of the Bible and believers because they served as holy representatives of God who most of the times lived apart from the worldly standards. They were the pastors of their day and most believers regard them as the best role models in religion. But that is not true. Great servants of God like Solomon, David and Daniel did not serve in church but in the world.
They were used by God to influence the world as Godâs servants. They were used as salt of the earth and light of the world. Salt and light both needs to be right in the place where they are required to influence.
When you have discovered the purpose of your life it is essential that you stick with it. Your shining, as a star, promotion, satisfaction and reward are all hinged on your life purpose. Should you stray from your purpose, you lose the power of influence and potential of greatness encapsulated within your life purpose.
Many people who have discovered their purpose in life have failed to do their best in their different fields of calling due to distractions and unnecessary diversifications. Some have allowed things to distract them and they have stopped pursuing their life purpose. Others have thought of becoming the jack of all trades and unfortunately have spread themselves too thing to be of an remarkable influence and effect in any one area.
The early disciples of Christ understood the great importance of sticking to oneâs life purpose. And this explains why they were successful in establishing and expanding the church that Christ founded. When the church began to grow by leaps and bounds the early disciples were impressed.
However, the growth of the church brought with it some challenges. One particular challenge recorded in Acts chapter 6 was the discrimination against Greek widows in the distribution of food. Accordingly, the Greek women took the issue to church leaders obviously expecting them to take up this task of distributing food upon their shoulders to ensure equality and fairness. But the response of the disciples was remarkable for two reasons: They did not take up this extra responsibility but they resolved the issue effectively.
The dispute resulted in the choosing of the first deacons. And these were given the job of faithfully and equally distributing the food. The apostles however remained stuck with their life purpose of prayer and the ministry of the word. Can you imagine what could have happened to the church and the gospel of Jesus Christ if the apostles had left their core assignment of prayer and ministry of the word and gave themselves to the task of waiting on tables?
