Sunderland survives, vows to perform better next season.

Sunderland secured their survival with a 3-0 thumping of Everton on Wednesday, in turn condemning fierce rivals Newcastle United and Norwich to relegation.

The Black Cats prevailed thanks to a brace from Lamine Kone and goal by Patrick van Aanholt on Wearside.

Norwich beat Watford 4-2 on the same evening but the result could not prevent their demotion along with the Magpies, who had been in the Premier League since the 2010/11 season.

The Canaries, meanwhile, return to the Championship after a single season in the topflight.

Aston Villa were already relegated before the night’s league action, which also saw Liverpool salvage a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Christian Benteke netted a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Eden Hazard’s 32nd minute opener at Anfield.

The Reds remain eighth on the table, three points shy of sixth-placed Southampton with a game left. The Blues are ninth.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have another chance to secure European football next season when they play Sevilla in the Europa League final on 18 May. The victor earns a spot in the Champions League. KickOff.com
