Tease your palate, do a little wine tasting

Under the careful guidance of our own homegrown Cape Wine Master, the wine buffs of tomorrow learn to appreciate the bouquet or nose of the wine, and then to analyse the actual taste. They will assess the acidity of a wine, its body, flavour, balance and aftertaste.
If this exciting pastime appeals to you, contact Faith, the owner of Liquid Lounge, about future tastings. Be sure not to wear strong perfume or exotic aftershave when you arrive, as this will interfere with your sense of smell and confuse the tasting process.
A visit to the Liquid Lounge is not only about enjoying a glass of full-bodied, spicy Shiraz, a tot of J&B on the rocks, or a can of ice-cold Castle beer. A simple menu at the restaurant offers a selection of tasty dishes, including grills, stir fries and hamburgers, all at very reasonable prices, and inclusive of a free glass of wine.
Last Saturday, George and I made our way on the off-chance to Liquid Lounge, arriving just after 1pm. We were the only clients, and the waiters, clad in black trousers with sunset orange sports shirts, gave us a royal welcome. We chose a window seat, overlooking the car park of the Rhodesville Shopping Centre.
The Chinese Takeaway on the ground floor was about to close, but a clothing shop with designer wear for men was still open. An estate agency with pictures of plots and houses displayed in the window was closed, as was an interesting looking antique shop.
The drinks waiter opened a bottle of Cape Stein and carefully poured out two glasses of wine, before another waiter took the order for our main courses.
George ordered pork chops with French fries, green pepper and carrot stir fry, served with mushroom sauce. I requested minute steak, French fries and fried egg, which was also garnished with green peppers and carrots. Both our dishes were priced at US$5.
Well, it took a while for our meals to arrive, but it was worth the wait. There were two large pork chops, grilled to perfection, and served with an artistically stacked pile of freshly made French fries. My fries were just as good, and the fried egg quite perfect, soft inside, cooked on the outside, without a hint of crisping or excess oil. Instead of minute steak I had a respectable slice of rump steak, perfectly cooked to medium rare.
There is not much in the way of décor to delight the eye at Liquid Lounge. The large rectangular room has a vast expanse of light-coloured tiled flooring, and is minimally furnished with metal and wooden tables and chairs. Windows on one side overlook the fairly attractive shopping centre, while the opposite side looks onto an untidy backyard and rubbish dump.
At either end of the restaurant are sofas and low tables. We decided to have dessert in the blue area, and reclined in comfort on a blue sofa, which ran alongside two walls. While George and I waited for our fruit salad and ice cream (US$2 each), we gazed up at the mini blue and grey glass chandelier hanging overhead and made small talk. There was another long wait while our waiter searched out the instant coffee, warm milk and cups and saucers. George and I discussed the finalists for American Idols, the imminent demise of Newcastle in Premier League football, and Alick Macheso’s performance at HIFA.
Our waiters were friendly and helpful, but service was slow. If you have plenty of time to spare, and appreciate complimentary wine, a meal at Liquid Lounge is good value.
