The power of kindness

The emphasis of this week’s message is on urging the person who has the means to help others to be kind enough to do so.
Kindness is a powerful tool of success. Showing kindness does not only help others who are in need but it has a great reward to the one who shows it. Someone said it well that kindness is difficult to give away as it keeps coming back to you. It is like a boomerang, if you throw it well it comes right back to you. It is not an exaggeration to say that kindness is a success factor that affects generations.
King David was shown kindness by Jonathan in his time of suffering under the wrath of Saul. King Saul and Jonathan died in war but later on when David was now comfortable as king he remembered to show kindness to Jonathan’s lame son, Mephibosheth. Mephi did not qualify to share food at the king’s table but the power of kindness placed him there.
Kindness defies the market philosophy in which everyone wants to be first, to be preferred before others and to be valued higher than others. Kindness submits to the spiritual laws of preferring others before you and of treating others the way you would want them to treat you.
Kindness means the same with words like charitableness, friendliness and benevolence. All refer to selfless acts of benefiting others free of charge. Kindness also has to do with showing goodwill and respect to others. It is an expression of love, mercy, compassion and sympathy towards those who are in need of assistance. It is an honour and a privilege to participate in the working of the grace of God in someone’s life through showing kindness.
The Scriptures show that God has a specific interest in the poor and needy and He promises to return kindness to anyone who shows the poor and needy an act of kindness.
All sorts of doors of blessings and favour fling open to the one who shows kindness to others. Kindness is not only found in good works of compassion towards others but there is also a law of kindness which should rule one’s tongue. You can speak kind words to the weary, irritated and agitated souls and witness miraculous transformations in their lives. Do not be stingy, if you cannot give substance then say a kind word to that person in trouble.
A good example of an act of kindness that resulted in the marvelous advancement of the one who showed kindness is recorded in the book of Esther. Mordecai was kind enough to be the nursing father of Esther, the orphan. Providentially, Esther grew up to be a queen and was instrumental in delivering Mordecai and all the Jews from the evil plots of Haman. And Mordecai ended up being promoted to be the second most powerful man in that kingdom after the king. His secret of success was hidden in the beautiful orphan. His destiny was bound up in the way he was going to treat Esther.
Dear reader, learn to treat everyone  especially those in need kindly for you do not know what position they will hold tomorrow. They might be your future employer, spouse, deliverer or promoter. How God will use Esther, the queen, to bless you and uplift you is determined by the way you treat Esther, the orphan.
This message has real practical implications today. Because of the pandemic HIV and Aids, economic hardships, and a host of other factors many people are in serious need. They are looking to those who have the means to jump-start them and link them to their destiny. If you have the means, do not be cruel but extend kindness to others. Your reward is certain for you cannot advance the interest of others without advancing yours.
