Three nights of international jazz
The festival, aptly named Three Nights of International Jazz, opened yesterday at the Italian Club in the capital and ends tomorrow.
However, the festival is by invitation.
Yesterday, the groups that were expected to play include the Andrea Marcelli Quartet from Italy and the CMS Trio from Spain. Mtukudzi was to come in as the icing on the cake. The show was hosted by Fiat, a renowned Italian automobile brand. Fiat will use the occasion to launch its brand in the country.
Tonight another Italian band, Max de Aloe Quintet, will make a date with Zimbabwean, Dudu Manhenga and her band, Color Blu, and versatile bassist, Josh Meck. Dudu is doing well on the local and international scene after a couple of successful tours of southern Africa and Europe. She also has a new album, Towards Alignment (recorded live at the Reps Theatre), which is her third recording so far. The event will be hosted by MSC, an international shipping company.
Tomorrow, which will be the final day of the jazz fest, the local sensation, Jazz Invitation, will be one of the attractions of the night including Piersmone Crinelli and the Mulligan Project from Italy.
A great addition to the line up is Ivan Mazuze from Mozambique who is now living in South Africa. The event will be hosted by Peroni, a beer brand.
The musicians to this year’s jazz fest will, today and tomorrow, also perform at the Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Fair to be held at the Harare showgrounds from 11am onwards. After the tourism fair, the musicians will hold additional concerts and workshops at Chisipite Girls High School where pupils from other schools will also be invited to attend and participate.
According to a statement from the Italian Embassy, the Italian Club will, in association with the Dante Alighieri Society and the Italian Cultural Society, offer a four-week programme of Italian contemporary movies every Thursday from Thursday next week.
An exhibition by Zimbabwean, Daniel Clayton, entitled Faces of Music will also be featured during the three-day long fest. The jazz festival has been running for three years now.
