‘We have won nothing yet’

KARIBA KEEPERTENDAI Hove, the ZPC Kariba captain, has warned his side not to be distracted by their huge victory against Dynamos last Sunday as they challenge for league glory. The Kariba based club, who many thought would have a difficult ride in the league following some delays in formalising their participation in the elite league made their biggest statement so far following their enthralling 1-0 win over Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium.

Veteran striker, Artwell  Nyamiwa, scored for ZPC Kariba two minutes into added time. Speaking to the Financial Gazette Sport, the 26-year-old former Ziscosteel, Lancashire Steel and Chrome Stars goalkeeper was adamant the players must not rest on their laurels as there is still a long way to go before the end of the season.

“It’s always important to beat Dynamos but we should not allow this (victory against Dynamos) to get into our heads,” said Hove who is also a qualified class 1 electrician. He added: “This will be  destructive because we still have to go the distance of playing 28 more games in the season. If we don’t do well playing against other teams our victory against Dynamos will count for nothing.

“We were lucky to start with the big teams (Caps United and Dynamos) and we managed to pick up important points which were highly unlikely. Now, our challenge is how to manage this success so far. I urge my teammates to guard against complacency after collecting a point against Caps United and overcoming defending champions Dynamos.

“We have not achieved anything in the campaign but what is important is to continue to fight for points. This is important in a league campaign.”

ZPC who are fourth on the log standings with four points are on the verge of wrapping up a second straight win in the league against Harare City following last Sunday’s engrossing 1-0 defeat of Dynamos.

The club which is sponsored by the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a parastatal responsible for generating electricity will on Easter Monday play against Harare City in the capital. In their opening game of the season, ZPC drew 1-1 with Caps United at Gwanzura stadium two weeks ago. The Saul Chaminuka coached club has in its books seasoned players like Norman Togara, David Rediyoni, Obey Mwerahari, Tawanda Munyanduri and Pride Tafirenyika.
