China Railway No. 9 Group is seeking to deepen its footprint in Zimbabwe by turning its partnership with Harare Polytechnic into a pipeline for industrial skills, employment and practical innovation, as the engineering and construction company moves to strengthen links between business and tertiary education.
The Chinese contractor says the newly unveiled Youth Bridge Workshop will provide a platform for students and faculty to gain practical exposure to engineering and construction, while creating potential pathways into employment and professional development.
“On the one hand, we are willing to bring our practical experience from engineering and construction into the campus, creating more opportunities for students and faculty to engage with the industry and gain practical knowledge,” China Railway No. 9 Group deputy general manager, Zhao Gangmin in a speech at Harare Polytechnic.
“On the other hand, we also hope to identify and support talented young people from Harare Polytechnic, creating pathways for employment and professional development, while promoting mutual growth between our company and local talent.”
The initiative comes as Harare Polytechnic seeks to strengthen the commercial relevance of its research and innovation activities, with its 2026 Research and Innovation Symposium placing industry engagement, venture funding and the movement of ideas from laboratories and workshops into the market at the centre of its programme.
The symposium programme includes discussions on financing business start-ups, solving real-world industrial gaps through applied research and developing bankable business concepts. It also provides for direct interaction between students, researchers and private-sector companies through exhibition stands.
For businesses operating in Zimbabwe, such partnerships offer a potential route to address skills shortages while gaining access to emerging technologies and locally developed solutions. For students, closer interaction with industry could improve their exposure to commercial requirements and create opportunities beyond conventional classroom-based training.
Gangmin said the company had been involved in engineering and construction projects in Zimbabwe while maintaining a commitment to local development.
“Since entering Zimbabwe, China Railway No. 9 Group has been actively engaged in engineering and construction projects across the country, while remaining firmly committed to local development.”
The company said its collaboration with Harare Polytechnic was intended to go beyond project delivery by establishing longer-term relationships with educational institutions and local talent.
The Youth Bridge Workshop is also expected to serve as a practical link between industry requirements and the skills being developed on campus, potentially allowing the company to identify talent at an earlier stage.
Harare Polytechnic’s symposium reflects a broader push to connect technical and vocational education with industrial demand. Its programme includes a keynote session on aligning technical and vocational education and training innovation with industrial requirements, as well as a panel examining how innovations can move from campus laboratories and workshops to the market.
Alongside the workshop, China Railway No. 9 Group and Harare Polytechnic launched the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Forest, with the company describing the project as a symbol of longer-term cooperation between the two countries.
“The friendship between China and Zimbabwe has a long history, and there remains great potential for practical cooperation in the years ahead,” Gangmin said.
The group said it expected its partnership with Harare Polytechnic to be “long-lasting and fruitful”, signalling an intention to expand cooperation between the contractor and the institution beyond the immediate initiatives.
For Zimbabwe, the commercial significance of such partnerships lies in whether stronger industry-academia links can translate research and technical training into employable skills, commercially viable innovations and a stronger domestic industrial base.
